Leicester City have confirmed the appointment of former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy as their new manager.
The Dutchman, who has signed a contract until 2027, replaces Steve Cooper following the Welshman’s dismissal last weekend.
Van Nistelrooy arrives with high expectations at the King Power Stadium, describing his excitement at taking on the role.
“I’m proud, I’m excited. Everybody that I speak to about Leicester City Football Club is enthusiastic,” he said.
“They have great stories about the quality of the people working at the club, the supporters and, of course, the recent history of the club is impressive.
“I’m excited to start and to get to know everyone and give everything I can for the football club.”
The 48-year-old has been out of work for just a few weeks after leaving Manchester United, where he served a brief four-game stint as interim manager following Erik ten Hag’s departure.
During his short tenure, he oversaw two victories against Leicester in the Carabao Cup and Premier League, performances that reportedly caught the attention of the Foxes’ hierarchy.
While Leicester considered other names, including Graham Potter and David Moyes, neither were seriously in contention.
Instead, the club opted for Van Nistelrooy, whose managerial experience includes leading PSV Eindhoven to the KNVB Cup during the 2022/23 season.
Van Nistelrooy will not take charge of the team immediately. First-team coach Ben Dawson has overseen training this week and will lead the team for Saturday’s trip to Brentford.
However, Van Nistelrooy will be in the dugout for Tuesday’s home clash against West Ham after being formally introduced at a press conference on Monday.
Leicester chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha welcomed the new manager, praising his credentials and the fresh energy he brings to the club.

Steve Cooper’s tenure came to an end after just 12 games, with Leicester’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea proving the final straw.
While they remain above the relegation zone, the board cited poor performances, reported player discontent, and a disconnect with supporters as reasons for the change.
