Gary Lineker has suggested that Ruud van Nistelrooy wasn’t the top candidate for Leicester City’s managerial vacancy after the sacking of Steve Cooper.
The Foxes announced on Friday night that the former Manchester United interim manager would take charge, marking a quick return to the Premier League for Van Nistelrooy, who left United earlier this month.
However, Lineker, a lifelong Leicester supporter, has revealed that the Dutchman may not have been the club’s first pick.
Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Lineker said:
“Whoever you go for it’s a gamble. I understand, I’m informed behind the scenes that one or two managers turned it down. But it’s an opportunity for Ruud. It’s a big name to come to Leicester City and I hope it works out.”
Leicester had been linked with high-profile names, including Graham Potter and David Moyes, as they sought Cooper’s replacement. Potter, previously in contention before Cooper’s appointment, and Moyes, currently unattached, were reportedly considered before Van Nistelrooy got the nod.
Van Nistelrooy’s appointment comes just days after Leicester’s disappointing 2-1 defeat to Chelsea, a result that proved to be the final straw for Cooper.
First-team coach Ben Dawson will lead the team against Brentford on Saturday, with Van Nistelrooy set to officially take charge on Sunday.
Interestingly, Van Nistelrooy oversaw two victories against Leicester during his brief stint as United’s interim boss, an experience that may have bolstered his appeal to the Foxes hierarchy.
He is expected to watch Saturday’s game from the stands before stepping into the dugout for his first match in charge.
