Among the bright sparks are Rayan Aït-Nouri, Jørgen Strand Larsen, and the undisputed star of the season so far, Matheus Cunha.
Rayan Aït-Nouri’s resurgence
Aït-Nouri has been a revelation this term. Operating as a left wing-back, the Algerian has managed five goal involvements in just 12 Premier League games, showcasing his attacking prowess and consistency in a struggling Wolves side.
His creativity and energy down the flank have made him one of the few dependable players in an otherwise disjointed campaign.
Jørgen Strand Larsen’s early impact
Summer signing Jørgen Strand Larsen has also impressed. The Norwegian centre-forward, on loan with an option to buy, has provided a much-needed presence up front.
With four goals and three assists in 13 appearances across all competitions, he’s quickly become a key figure in Wolves’ attack, offering both goals and link-up play.
Matheus Cunha’s dazzling form
However, it is Matheus Cunha who has truly shone this season. The Brazilian forward has been Wolves’ standout performer, delivering exceptional numbers despite the team’s struggles.
In 12 Premier League appearances, Cunha has contributed seven goals and three assists. His performances have been crucial to Wolves’ two recent wins, which broke a ten-game winless streak.
Against Southampton, he scored and assisted to secure victory, while his brace and assist in the 4-1 thrashing of Fulham at Craven Cottage underlined his importance.
Cunha’s ten goal involvements place him joint third in the Premier League this season, alongside Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson. Only Mohamed Salah, Erling Haaland, Cole Palmer, and Bukayo Saka have more, demonstrating the Brazilian’s elite company.
A versatile forward, Cunha has been deployed across the front three and in deeper roles. While his most effective position is as a number ten, he has made meaningful contributions regardless of where he plays.
Manchester United circling
Unfortunately for Wolves, Cunha’s stellar form has not gone unnoticed. Reports suggest Manchester United are plotting a summer move for the 25-year-old, which would be a significant blow for Wolves if they cannot retain their talisman.
Chem Campbell: A potential successor
Should Cunha depart, Wolves may already have a promising replacement within their ranks. Welsh attacking midfielder Chem Campbell, currently on loan at League One side Reading, has been earning rave reviews for his performances.
The 21-year-old has made 14 appearances for Reading this season, scoring three goals and registering four assists. While primarily used as a winger, Campbell’s ability to play as a number ten makes him a versatile attacking option.
Campbell is no stranger to Wolves’ first team, having made eight appearances since his debut in the 2019 Carabao Cup. Loan spells at Charlton Athletic and Wycombe Wanderers have helped him gain valuable experience, and his current form at Reading suggests he is ready to take the next step.
Wolves pathways manager Steve Davis has praised Campbell’s creativity, saying, “He can unlock a defence… he has an ability to see passes and create chances for his teammates with ease.”
If Cunha does leave Molineux, Campbell could be an ideal long-term replacement. While he would need time to adjust to Premier League football, his potential and attacking flair could see him become a vital part of Wolves’ future.
