Chris Sutton has predicted a difficult evening for Gary O’Neil as Wolves prepare to face West Ham United at the London Stadium on Monday.
While Julen Lopetegui is under immense pressure, Sutton believes it will be O’Neil who leaves the clash on the losing side.
In his Premier League predictions for BBC Sport (9 December), Sutton backed West Ham to claim a crucial victory.
“This might end badly for Gary O’Neil and Wolves and, while we are not seeing the West Ham we expected from Lopetegui, he may live to fight another day,” he said.
Sutton highlighted Wolves’ vulnerabilities under O’Neil, particularly their defensive frailties.
“The last time Wolves went to London, at the end of November, they beat Fulham 4-1 and enjoyed themselves. I can’t see the same happening here though, because of the number of goals they are conceding.
“The way they play under O’Neil, they are so open. West Ham are going to get some chances and although they missed a few against Leicester, I am backing them to take them this time. Prediction: 3-1.”
Lopetegui’s precarious position
Julen Lopetegui’s future at West Ham has been hanging by a thread for weeks. Earlier in November, The Guardian reported that fixtures against Newcastle United and Arsenal were deemed must-win games for the Spaniard.
While Lopetegui managed a 2-0 victory over Newcastle, a humbling 5-2 defeat against Arsenal and subsequent losses, including to Leicester City, left his position in serious doubt. However, West Ham owner David Sullivan has so far resisted calls to make a change.
Behind the scenes, the Hammers are already assessing potential replacements. According to Calciomercato, they have outlined conditions for the appointment of Max Allegri should the managerial post become available.
Lopetegui’s relationship with the fans appears beyond repair. Chants calling for his removal echoed from the away end during their 3-1 defeat at Leicester, underlining the supporters’ dissatisfaction.
