Matt Doherty has offered insight into the Wolves squad’s perspective on Gary O’Neil’s future as speculation mounts about the manager’s position.
Despite Wolves sitting four points adrift in the relegation zone, the Republic of Ireland international has thrown his full support behind O’Neil, describing him as an “unbelievable” coach.
Doherty, speaking after Wolves’ 2-1 defeat to West Ham, expressed confusion over why the team’s performances on the training pitch are not translating into results.
He insists the players hold O’Neil in high regard and share his disappointment at their current predicament.
“He’s a great coach, unbelievable on the training pitch all week,” Doherty told Sky Sports.
“For whatever reason it’s not resulting in results. I think you can ask all the players, they wouldn’t have a negative to say about him. We’re disappointed for ourselves, our fans. There’s a lot of outside noise but we’re disappointed for him.”
The loss at West Ham intensified speculation that O’Neil could be dismissed, but it appears he will remain in charge for Wolves’ crucial home clash against Ipswich Town on Saturday.
That fixture marks the start of a pivotal week for Wolves, who also face Leicester City in another relegation showdown.
The pressure is mounting on O’Neil to deliver victories in both matches, and failure to do so could spell the end of his tenure. While Doherty and his teammates remain supportive, the harsh realities of football dictate that results are the ultimate measure of success.
O’Neil Determined to Fight On
O’Neil himself remains defiant, acknowledging the frustrations of fans but vowing to continue working to turn the club’s fortunes around.
“I hope the supporters are still proud of what they see from the players because they want to win football matches and get out of the position we’re in,” O’Neil said ahead of the Ipswich game.
“They won’t hate it any more than me, I’m right there with them if they know it or not in this moment. We won’t give up, we’ll keep pushing and get to work for a big game against Ipswich.”
For O’Neil, the upcoming matches represent a last chance to salvage Wolves’ season—and possibly his job.
