As anticipation reaches fever pitch ahead of tomorrow’s Premier Sports Cup Final at Hampden Park, former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson has identified Kyogo Furuhashi as the key threat facing the Ibrox side.
With silverware and bragging rights on the line, Ferguson believes the Japanese striker could once again be the decisive figure for Celtic.
Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show, Ferguson highlighted Kyogo’s evolution since joining Celtic in 2021.
While his relentless movement and tireless work rate were evident from the start, Ferguson noted that the 28-year-old has refined other aspects of his game, making him an even greater danger to defences.
Referencing Kyogo’s goal in Celtic’s recent 3-0 victory over Hibernian, Ferguson lauded the striker’s blend of precision, movement, and clinical finishing.
“He’s been a thorn in the Rangers side for a long time,” Ferguson said.
“Paul, we were actually speaking before we came on air; I think he’s improved. I think he’s become a better player over the last couple of years since he’s been here.
“His touch, his movement, his work rate was always there. There was no question of that, but I think as he’s maturing, he’s definitely getting better. And I thought his goal at the weekend against Hibs was just a bit of class, if I’m being brutally honest.
“It’s hard for me to say that right enough, but it was an unbelievable touch. And then what gets me is the composure when he gets into the area, and then just dinks it over. Whoever is playing at centre back, they need to be wary of him.
“They need to make sure that if he’s moving all the time, there’s constant communication because he’s always on the move. I think he’s a top player.”
Brendan Rodgers’ record in the Premier Sports Cup further bolsters Celtic’s confidence.
The manager has suffered just one defeat in the competition during his time at the club and has an enviable derby record, with only one loss in 19 encounters against Rangers.
Kyogo’s performances in finals and against Rangers underline his importance. His brace in the 2022 Premier Sports Cup Final showcased his movement and finishing prowess, and he has since cemented his status as Celtic’s talisman for big occasions.
With eight goals in 15 appearances against Rangers, Furuhashi will undoubtedly be the focal point of Celtic’s attack, and Rangers’ defence will need to be on high alert to contain him.
