Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha is expected to feature in today’s Premier League match against Leicester City, despite recent disciplinary issues.
Following a 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town on 14 December, Cunha was involved in a post-match altercation where he allegedly struck an Ipswich security guard and removed his glasses.
The Football Association (FA) responded by charging Cunha with misconduct. Their statement read:
“Matheus Cunha has been charged with misconduct following the Premier League match between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Ipswich Town on Saturday, 14 December. The forward allegedly acted in an improper manner after the final whistle. He has until Thursday, 19 December, to provide a response.”
Despite the charge, Cunha remains eligible to play against Leicester, as any potential suspension would only take effect after the FA’s disciplinary process concludes.
Wolves’ new manager, Vítor Pereira, who was appointed following the sacking of Gary O’Neil after the Ipswich defeat, has not indicated any intention to exclude Cunha from the squad for today’s fixture.
Pereira, a 56-year-old Portuguese coach with a history of managing clubs across Europe and Asia, has been tasked with improving Wolves’ fortunes as they currently sit 19th in the Premier League.
His immediate focus will be on stabilizing the team’s performance and addressing disciplinary issues that have plagued the squad in recent matches.
Cunha’s availability is crucial for Wolves, given his role in the team’s attacking lineup. The Brazilian forward has been a regular starter, and his presence will be vital as Pereira aims to secure a positive result in his managerial debut against Leicester.
