Nottingham Forest are actively exploring options to strengthen their attacking line in the January transfer window, with manager Nuno Espirito Santo keen to consolidate the club’s push for European football.
Chris Wood’s exceptional form has been a cornerstone of Forest’s success this season. The New Zealand international has netted ten Premier League goals, including a crucial strike in the recent away victory over Manchester United.
Brentford manager Thomas Frank, speaking ahead of Forest’s upcoming clash with the Bees, singled out Wood for praise. Yet, it’s not just Wood who has caught the eye—Forest’s attacking unit has been firing on multiple fronts.
Anthony Elanga earned widespread plaudits for his dramatic winner against Aston Villa, while Morgan Gibbs-White and Callum Hudson-Odoi have also delivered standout performances.
However, despite the collective success, Espirito Santo is reportedly keen to further enhance his squad as Forest aim to maintain their lofty fourth-place position in the Premier League table.
This ambition could spell the end of Taiwo Awoniyi’s time at the City Ground. According to the Daily Mail, Forest are planning to add a new forward in January, and Awoniyi may be made available for transfer if a suitable replacement is secured.
“Expect Forest to move for another forward in January and if they can sign one, the club will likely listen to offers for Taiwo Awoniyi,” the report stated.
Forest have been linked with several attacking talents, including Spanish forward Raul Moro from Real Valladolid and Mexican striker Santiago Gimenez, whose availability in January reignites interest after Forest’s previous pursuit.
Awoniyi’s form this season has been underwhelming. The Nigerian has failed to register a goal or assist in 11 Premier League appearances, often playing second fiddle to the in-form Wood.
While his struggles this campaign may justify a potential exit, his contributions in earlier seasons remain significant.
Espirito Santo recently expressed trust in Awoniyi, who last started in Forest’s 3-0 defeat to Arsenal.
The striker’s role in Forest’s 2022/23 campaign was pivotal, as he netted ten league goals in the club’s first season back in the Premier League. His tally led the team, with Brennan Johnson scoring eight and Gibbs-White contributing five.
If Awoniyi departs in January, Forest fans should remember his vital contributions during that promotion season.
