Kasper Schmeichel has quickly proven to be one of Celtic’s standout signings of the summer, seamlessly adapting to life in Glasgow’s east end.
The experienced goalkeeper has solidified his reputation as the best in Scotland, earning yet another clean sheet in Celtic’s goalless draw with Dundee United.
His performances this season have already included standout moments, such as his heroics away at Atalanta, a man-of-the-match display against Hibs, and a crucial penalty save in last weekend’s Premier Sports Cup final to deny Ridvan Yilmaz during a tense shootout.
Signed on a free transfer, Schmeichel is increasingly looking like a shrewd acquisition. Former Celtic winger Aiden McGeady believes the 38-year-old represents an upgrade over his predecessor, Joe Hart.
Speaking on Sky Sports ahead of the game at Tannadice, McGeady said:
“No disrespect to Joe Hart, he’s (Schmeichel) possibly been a bit of an upgrade in terms of how good he is with the ball at his feet and the way he wants to play.
“He’s got loads of experience… Now he’s really settled.
“He’s a fantastic ‘keeper and has made some vital, vital saves.
“I think Joe Hart was a slightly different goalkeeper and possibly more of a vocal leader, but Schmeichel has been fantastic for Celtic this season.”
McGeady’s comments on Schmeichel and Hart reflect the different qualities each brought to Celtic.
Both players, who started their careers together at Manchester City, went on to forge successful yet distinct paths, eventually spending the twilight of their careers at Celtic.
Although Hart has retired, his bond with the club remains strong. He was even spotted in the stands at Tannadice yesterday with his son, further demonstrating his enduring connection to the Hoops.
