Celtic have announced that Kasper Schmeichel will remain with the club until the summer of 2026 after agreeing to extend his contract.
The 38-year-old initially signed a one-year deal last summer, with the option for an additional year contingent on mutual agreement. His impressive performances this season made the decision to secure his services straightforward for both the club and the player.
Since joining Parkhead in 2024, Schmeichel has swiftly become a fan favorite and an integral part of Brendan Rodgers’ team.
Renowned for his skills as a ball-playing goalkeeper, he has received widespread acclaim not only for his exceptional shot-stopping but also for his precise passing, which has helped Celtic transition effectively from defence to attack.
One standout moment has already cemented his place in the club’s history. During November’s League Cup final against Rangers, Schmeichel delivered a remarkable save in the penalty shootout, ensuring Celtic lifted the trophy at Hampden.
This instance epitomized the calmness and leadership he has brought to the squad since his arrival.
Reflecting on his new deal, Schmeichel said:
“I am really happy to extend my contract with the club. I have had a great welcome and have loved every minute so far at Celtic, and I am really looking forward to the next period at such a great football club.
“We have already enjoyed success this season, and everyone at the club is focused on delivering more. It has been great to be working again with the gaffer and to be part of such a brilliant dressing room, and I wanted to be a part of this going forward. As ever, we are all really together and fully focused on bringing our fans as much success as we can.”
Manager Brendan Rodgers highlighted Schmeichel’s importance to the team, saying:
“I am really pleased that Kasper will be staying with us. He has already made a great impact on the club, on and off the pitch, and his quality and experience have been crucial for us.
“Clearly we knew that we were signing a top keeper last year, but he has really delivered for the club already, and I know he will continue to do so. I know how much he loves being part of such a great club, and as one of our real leaders, he will be a massive part of what we are hoping to achieve as we go forward.”
Schmeichel’s leadership and consistency will be vital as Celtic pursue further silverware this season.
He is set to guard the net tonight as the team aims to secure a place in the Champions League knockout stages for the first time in 12 years, with a decisive clash against Young Boys on the horizon.
