Tottenham have confirmed yet another winter signing, even though the transfer window closed yesterday, and this time it’s a promising young Irish forward from St Patrick’s Athletic, Mason Melia.
Tottenham Hotspur’s Interest in Mason Melia
Earlier this month, Tottenham Hotspur were linked with a move for Mason Melia, a 17-year-old Irish striker currently playing for St Patrick’s Athletic.
The forward’s record speaks for itself. As a teenager, he made history last year by becoming the youngest goalscorer in League of Ireland history when he scored against UCD at just 15 years and 281 days old.
That historic achievement was followed by an outstanding season in which Melia made 41 appearances for St Pat’s across all competitions, showcasing a level of maturity well beyond his years.
His performances had attracted attention not only from Spurs but also from Celtic, who were reportedly keen on signing the young forward. However, their efforts did not succeed, as the Irish talent has now chosen to join Tottenham instead.
Spurs Confirm the Signing of Melia:
Tottenham Hotspur have officially secured the signing of Mason Melia from St Patrick’s Athletic for a fee of £1.6 million plus add-ons (Tom Barclay).
Due to Brexit regulations, however, he won’t be able to officially join the club until January 2026, the first transfer window after his 18th birthday. This deal makes him the first million-pound player to be signed from Ireland.
The Tottenham club statement reads: “We are delighted to announce that we have reached an agreement with League of Ireland side St Patrick’s Athletic for the transfer of Mason Melia. The 17-year-old forward has agreed a deal that will run until 2031 and will join us in January, 2026.”
Melia joins Kevin Danso, Antonin Kinsky, and Mathys Tel as winter additions to the club. While it remains to be seen what role the forward will play in Ange Postecoglou’s squad, the fact that he will remain at his current club until 2026 is a clear indication that he is being signed as a player for the future.
