Leicester City have left the decision up to Tom Cannon on whether to join Sunderland or Sheffield United following his recall from a loan spell at Stoke City. The move was reported by journalist Alan Nixon.
Cannon, who was loaned out to Stoke last summer, quickly became an integral part of their squad, scoring 11 goals across 25 matches. Despite Stoke’s inconsistent form, the 22-year-old striker emerged as their key attacking threat.
The Potters had been keen to retain Cannon for the remainder of the season, but Leicester opted to recall him with plans to facilitate a permanent transfer.
In a statement, Stoke City acknowledged Cannon’s contributions:
“Tom Cannon has been recalled from his loan spell at Stoke City by parent club Leicester City.
“The Republic of Ireland international scored 11 times for the Potters in 25 appearances in all competitions after arriving on the final day of the summer transfer window.
“Tom has our thanks for his commitment to the Stoke City cause during his loan spell with the club. We wish him well for the future.”
Both Sunderland and Sheffield United are now vying for Cannon’s signature, with each club tabling bids of £13 million. Leicester are reportedly ready to accept both offers, allowing Cannon to enter talks with both sides.
Sheffield United, however, may have an edge in offering a higher salary compared to Sunderland. Nevertheless, Cannon will need to evaluate all aspects before deciding which club aligns best with his ambitions.
The deal, when finalized, will mark the end of Cannon’s time at Leicester, as the move is a permanent one. Both Sunderland and Sheffield United are confident that the young striker can play a pivotal role in their respective promotion campaigns.
