Everton are reportedly in discussions to secure the permanent signing of Aston Villa winger Jaden Philogene, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Philogene, previously described as “ridiculous” for his potential, returned to Villa during the summer transfer window after a stint with Hull City.
However, his time under Unai Emery this season has not gone as planned, with the young forward struggling to make a significant impact.
Since rejoining Villa Park, the 22-year-old has played a limited role, featuring sparingly in the Premier League.
He has started just two league games this campaign, making it no surprise that a January transfer could be on the cards to revive his career.
Romano revealed that Everton are now negotiating a permanent deal for the winger, with talks underway.
The Toffees, already using their two domestic loan slots for Armando Broja and Jack Harrison, are reportedly looking to finalize a permanent move instead of a loan arrangement.
“Everton have opened talks to sign Jaden Philogene from Aston Villa. Understand it could be a permanent move rather than loan, Everton are trying to make it happen with this formula. Negotiations underway.”
This isn’t the first time Everton have shown interest in Philogene. During the summer transfer window, The Athletic reported that the Merseyside club made a £16 million bid for the winger.
At the time, Ipswich Town and Crystal Palace were also monitoring him, and it remains to be seen if those clubs will reignite their interest following Everton’s renewed push. However, Philogene’s lack of game time this season might deter potential suitors.
For Everton, who have struggled offensively during a challenging campaign, adding another attacking option has been a clear priority for the January window.
Sean Dyche will be eager to bolster his squad, and Philogene could fit the bill as a promising young player capable of providing fresh attacking impetus.
From Philogene’s perspective, a move could be exactly what he needs to reignite his development.
With limited opportunities under Emery, a switch to Goodison Park could offer the England youth international regular first-team football. If the transfer goes through, it might prove to be a smart decision for both the player and Everton.
