Mark Wilson has claimed Rangers were fortunate to finish Thursday’s Old Firm victory with a full team on the field.
Celtic suffered a comprehensive defeat as Rangers secured a dominant 3-0 win at Ibrox, marking Philippe Clement’s first victory over Brendan Rodgers in seven attempts.
Goals from Ianis Hagi, Robin Propper, and Danilo ensured a memorable day for the Light Blues, but former Celtic defender Wilson believes the hosts should have been reduced to ten men shortly before halftime.
The incident in question involved Celtic winger Nicolas Kuhn, who was struck by a swinging elbow from Brazilian full-back Jefte, leaving Kuhn with a bloodied nose.
After receiving on-field medical attention, Kuhn managed to continue, while Jefte was shown a yellow card.
However, Wilson argued that VAR official Nick Walsh should have instructed referee Don Robertson to review the incident on the pitchside monitor.
Speaking to Open Goal, Wilson stated:
“I’ve got to say, that was as blatant a red card as you’ll see. Was there proper force behind it? How can it not be if it bursts his nose. I think if you’re booking him for that and thinking it’s not accidental… I think it’s a red card all day long.
“I said it right at the time. We watched a replay from a different angle and I thought, ‘Right maybe he’s not meant it.’ Then you see it from behind the goal and I thought, ‘Jeez, that’s a red card all day long.’ I can’t believe he never got called over to look at it.”
While Robertson has generally received praise for his officiating during the derby, the decision not to escalate the incident has sparked debate.
Just weeks ago, VAR officials Alan Muir and Frank Connor faced criticism for failing to award a clear penalty during the League Cup Final at Hampden.
Former top-flight referee Des Roache, appearing on Ref Watch for Record Sport, offered a contrasting perspective on the incident, concluding that a yellow card was appropriate:
“It’s not a deliberate action. He’s actually using his arm to balance, but he has caught him. So therefore it’s reckless and dangerous rather than serious foul play or violent conduct. So I’m okay with the yellow for that.”
