The Premier League has confirmed that Santiago Bueno’s goal against Newcastle was disallowed due to handball.
The Wolves defender believed he had scored a consolation goal for Vitor Pereira’s side in their 3-0 defeat, but a VAR review determined that Bueno handled the ball before finding the net.
In a statement, the Premier League explained:
“Bueno’s goal was awarded on-field. The VAR deemed that Bueno handled the ball immediately before scoring and recommended that the goal was disallowed.”
Earlier in the match, Alexander Isak’s brace had put Newcastle in control, with the Swedish striker later assisting Anthony Gordon for the team’s third goal.
VAR reviewed Gordon’s strike but upheld the decision, stating:
“The referee’s call of goal was checked and confirmed by VAR as Isak was in an onside position in the build-up.”
Newcastle’s victory marks their ninth consecutive win, propelling them into the top four at Chelsea’s expense after the Blues dropped points against Bournemouth on Tuesday.
For Wolves, the result leaves them in the relegation zone, though only on goal difference. They face another tough challenge on Monday as they travel to Chelsea in search of crucial points.
