John Wenham thinks Tottenham should “cash in” on Giovani Lo Celso in the January transfer window, even though Lo Celso has been in great form recently.
Lo Celso has played more minutes in recent weeks due to James Maddison’s long-term injury and he has performed well in those minutes.
During the recent 3-3 draw with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday 3 December, Lo Celso scored from distance while completing an impressive 100% of his passes (Sofascore).
However, Ange Postecoglou confirmed in the build-up to Spurs’ 2-0 win at Nottingham Forest on Friday 15 December that the Argentina international had suffered a knock (Football London, 14 December), with Wenham believing it is a sign that it is time for Tottenham to move on from the 27-year-old.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: ‘Speaking to Tottenham News, he said that it’s important to take on board that the player is going to leave: ‘We’ve seen that with his goals and performances against Manchester City and Aston Villa, so it’s a shame for him that he’s injured.
“It’s sad because we’ve finally seen his positive contribution, he’s made a difference on the pitch and finally met some of the early expectations of him, but this injury is just a repeat of what we’ve seen in his career so far at Tottenham.
“In my opinion, it has destroyed any chance of him establishing himself as a player for the future. Considering he only has 18 months left on his contract, I think January will be the last time Tottenham will be able to cash in and get some decent money for him.
“There are reports coming out of Spain that Barcelona are interested in him and I can see Tottenham accepting an offer for him.
“Despite the recent resurgence, I think this injury is a reminder that he will never be a reliable long-term option for Tottenham.”
