Barry Ferguson, the former Rangers captain, believes the club is just three experienced signings away from being able to mount a serious challenge to Celtic.
In the early stages of the season, it has become evident that Rangers manager Philippe Clement needs reinforcements, especially after a series of disappointing results, including a draw with Hearts, a defeat to Dynamo Kyiv, and unconvincing victories over Motherwell and St Johnstone.
Rangers were active early in the transfer window, but most of their signings were younger, less experienced players or squad members, such as back-up goalkeeper Liam Kelly.
While the club did manage to bring in Connor Barron and Vaclav Cerny, who have made notable contributions to the first team, there is a growing consensus that more is needed if Rangers are to improve on last season’s performance.
Clement and sporting director Nils Koppen are actively working to strengthen the squad, but they are currently hampered by the need to sell players before they can make any significant additions.
Ferguson, however, is adamant that Rangers should prioritise signing three seasoned professionals who can provide the leadership and guidance that the current team lacks.
In his column for the Daily Record, Ferguson wrote:
“I’ve always said that you can only properly assess how a team is shaping up once the window shuts – but there’s no doubt there’s plenty of work still to be done on this Rangers team. I know the players are trying their damnedest to get the fans back onside after a gloomy summer. But it’s clear as day they need some major help.”
Ferguson emphasised the importance of adding experienced players to the squad, noting that they could play a crucial role in helping the younger members of the team navigate the challenges of the season.
“Clement and Koppen will be combing through their list of targets hoping they can get some new faces in late. If it were me making the big calls, I’d have three experienced campaigners right at the top of my wish list.
“I’d be looking for some streetwise characters who have been around the block and will be able to help guide the younger lads in the team through the difficult moments that are certain to come over the next nine months.”
There has been speculation that this season might be viewed as a transitional period for Rangers, as Clement looks to reshape the squad and give younger players the opportunity to develop. However, Ferguson is not convinced by this argument and insists that Rangers should never write off a campaign.
“I’ve heard it suggested that the fans need to accept this is a rebuilding year and that it will be difficult to challenge for prizes. Not for me. This is Rangers, it’s a club built on success and for me, we must at least strive to have a go,” Ferguson asserted.
He acknowledged that the club is undergoing a squad overhaul and that the board is attempting to implement a new player-trading model, but he cautioned against losing sight of Rangers’ winning tradition.
“I get there’s a squad refurb and the top brass are trying to implement a new player-trading model at the club. For me that’s exactly what Rangers should be aspiring to develop. But this club has a tradition of winning and that should never be forgotten.”
Ferguson concluded by reiterating the need for immediate reinforcements, stressing how vital it is for Clement to bring in experienced players who can make an instant impact.
“It would help massively if Phil could just get his hands on a few wise old heads to help the younger lads in there. The club have obviously prioritised signing younger players this summer with Connor Barron, Jefte, Clinton Nsiala and Hamza Igamane.
“But it’s time to think about the here and now and hopefully Clement and Koppen can find some ready-made recruits capable of lifting this team. And I know how important that can be.”
As Rangers look to close the gap on Celtic, the next few weeks could prove pivotal in determining whether they can genuinely compete for silverware this season.
