Leeds United have concluded their transfer window with significant moves, notably securing Manor Solomon on loan from Tottenham Hotspur.
This addition is expected to bolster their squad as they aim for a successful Championship campaign following their defeat to Southampton in last year’s play-off final.
However, Leeds are not resting on their laurels and are already planning for the future, with Nigerian ‘wonderkid’ Leonard Ngenge reportedly on their radar.
After narrowly missing automatic promotion last season, Leeds saw some of their key players depart, which has raised concerns about their chances this season.
Despite these setbacks, there is a renewed sense of optimism around Elland Road, buoyed by the club’s efforts to strengthen their squad.
The report by Alan Nixon states that Leeds are ‘setting up’ a deal to sign young Nigerian star Ngenge, though they will have to wait a couple of years until he comes through the door at Thorp Arch to be able to train with the first team or youth academy.
The left-back, 16, travelled to Leeds on trial from Ikorodu City in the transfer window, though he is not allowed to join until he is 18 years of age.
However, due to FIFA regulations, Ngenge cannot officially join until he turns 18. Although he was also sought after by Swedish side Hammarby, the same rules apply, putting Leeds in a position where they must secure his future transfer now and wait until he is eligible to play.
Leeds have already felt the impact of their failure to secure Premier League promotion last season. The squad has been significantly depleted by the sale of several promising players.
Notable departures include Archie Gray, who moved to Tottenham Hotspur, Crysencio Summerville, who joined West Ham United, and Georginio Rutter, who signed with Brighton.
Additionally, Glen Kamara has left for Rennes, and experienced players such as Marc Roca, Diego Llorente, and Robin Koch have also moved on.
These exits have forced Leeds to seek replacements, and while the club has made some astute signings, including Joe Rodon, Jayden Bogle, and Largie Ramazani, there remains a noticeable drop in quality compared to last season. Wilfried Gnonto’s new deal is a positive development, but the overall squad depth appears thinner.
Daniel Farke’s side has experienced a mixed start to the season with two draws followed by consecutive wins against Sheffield Wednesday and Hull City.
These victories have propelled them to fourth in the Championship table. Farke, who has previously won two Championship titles with Norwich City, will be hoping to guide Leeds back to the Premier League.
With the right additions and improvements, Leeds will be aiming to build on their current form and mount a serious promotion challenge.
