Irish centre-half John Egan could be set for a return to the Premier League with West Ham United this month. The 31-year-old Cork native, who left Sheffield United at the end of last season after six years with the club, is reportedly under consideration by the Hammers, according to The Athletic.
Egan is expected to feature in a behind-closed-doors friendly for West Ham on Thursday, as the club weighs up the possibility of signing him on a free transfer.
This move comes in the wake of the departures of Kurt Zouma and Nayef Aguerd, both of whom left the East London side on loan deals last week. With West Ham now in need of defensive reinforcements, Egan appears to be a suitable candidate.
During his time with Sheffield United, Egan made 223 appearances and played a crucial role in helping the Blades secure two promotions to the Premier League in 2019 and 2023. Before his successful spell at Bramall Lane, Egan also spent time with Sunderland and Brentford.
On the international stage, Egan has been capped 36 times for the Republic of Ireland since making his debut in 2017 under Martin O’Neill.
However, the centre-back, who is the son of six-time All-Ireland winning Kerry legend John Egan Sr., was not included in Heimir Hallgrimsson’s Ireland squad this month, having been sidelined for much of the past year with a foot injury. His last appearance for Ireland came in September 2023 against the Netherlands.
West Ham, under the management of Julen Lopetegui, have had a mixed start to the Premier League season, securing just one win from their opening three games. They will be looking to bolster their squad as they prepare to face Fulham away on Saturday, September 14.
