Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna felt his side were full value for a point after coming from behind to draw 1-1 with table-topping Leicester at Portman Road.
City fought back from a goal behind after 24 minutes through Stephy Mavidi’s superb strike, but Sam Morsy parried a shot in the third minute of stoppage time to earn a share of the spoils.
The midfielder hit Ricardo Pereira and then Jannik Vestergaard’s header from the edge of the penalty area, but City goalkeeper Mads Hermansen was helpless.
The draw leaves Town six points ahead of the Foxes and five points ahead of third-placed Southampton, who moved up one place to become the Traktor Boys’ closest challengers for automatic promotion after their 5-0 win over Swansea.
McKenna said of Wednesday’s game against Liverpool: “The goals we scored at the end were at least deserved.
“I thought we started the game very positively. Leicester scored the first goal with good quality, which they can do, a good move, a top performance and also a finish.
“It was a game where we were good in most aspects. I think we pressed very well against one of the best, if not the best team in the league and we contained them as well.
“We built well against a team that usually presses well and it’s difficult to create good chances against a team that is so stubborn, but we created enough to justify a goal.
“I think overall we did a lot more good than bad.”
Enzo Maresca was disappointed to be so close to another three points.
Maresca said: “At that moment we were in the game to win it: “It’s a pity because we were so close to winning another game, but at the same time during the game we were expecting to drop a little bit.
“With so many games, it’s normal that when you play a game every few days, you can fall a little bit.
“Overall I think in 65/70 minutes, especially in the first half, we had three or four one-on-one chances… we scored, and then probably the last 10/15 minutes we conceded a bit more, we let them control it, but playing every three days, the way this team (Ipswich) works, it’s fantastic, it’s normal, but at the end of the day I’m happy.
“The second half, 20 minutes, half an hour we controlled quite well, then the last 10 minutes we concede a little bit more and lose easy balls … I think that’s normal, they’re human and when you play every few days they can drop a little bit.”
