Leeds United surprised their supporters shortly after transfer deadline day by announcing a new four-year contract for Wilfried Gnonto.
The Italian international, who had been the subject of significant transfer speculation throughout the summer, committed his future to the club, much to the relief of fans and the hierarchy at Elland Road.
At just 20, Gnonto has already made a substantial impact since joining Leeds. Rumours had circulated that he was looking to force a move away from the club, particularly following his decision to refuse to play last season in a bid to secure an exit.
However, those close to the player insist that Gnonto always wanted to stay at Leeds, despite the intense interest from other clubs.
This summer, the situation seemed to mirror that of his close friend and teammate Crysencio Summerville, who departed Leeds for West Ham.
But while Summerville opted for a move to the Premier League, Gnonto has remained at Leeds, taking on a leadership role within the squad as the team fights for promotion back to the top flight.
With Leeds targeting automatic promotion under Daniel Farke, Gnonto’s commitment is seen as a key boost to their aspirations.
Despite his renewed commitment to Leeds, interest in Gnonto has not diminished. Serie A sides Genoa and Parma are reportedly keeping a close eye on the talented winger, with potential moves in January already being touted.
Former Leeds midfielder Carlton Palmer weighed in on the speculation surrounding Gnonto’s future, speaking on Football League World. Palmer is confident that Leeds are in a strong position to retain the Italy star, given his new contract.
“Leeds are in a very, very strong position. He’s signed a new contract until 2028. So, the Serie A duo will have to come up with an awful lot of money for Daniel Farke to part company with Willy Gnonto,” Palmer stated.
He continued: “It’s always a worry when these types of rumours start swirling. We know there’s going to be plenty of interest in Gnonto, but he will be hoping to play with Leeds back in the Premier League next season.
“It’s important that they keep hold of him. It shows Gnonto’s commitment to the club, and Leeds United’s to him, so I don’t think it’s a major concern unless these clubs are prepared to break the bank to get him.”
There has been widespread concern at Leeds about release clauses, which have already led to the departures of several key players, including Georginio Rutter to Brighton and Archie Gray to Tottenham.
However, sources at the club have confirmed that Gnonto’s new contract does not include a release clause, a significant relief for Leeds fans who feared losing another star.
