In a fiery outburst, former Celtic defender Mark Wilson launched a scathing attack on ex-Rangers star Vladimir Weiss, branding him a “f***** p****” following an emotional Champions League night at Parkhead.
The outburst came after Weiss, now captain of Slovan Bratislava, returned to Glasgow as his side faced off against Celtic, only to suffer a crushing 5-1 defeat at the hands of Brendan Rodgers’ men.
Weiss, who enjoyed cult hero status at Ibrox during his time with Rangers, now plies his trade in Slovakia.
As skipper of Slovan Bratislava, the Slovakian champions battled through the arduous Champions League qualifying stages to reach the group stage, only to be humbled by the Scottish giants in their opening match.
Celtic’s emphatic win was not only a statement of intent in Europe but also sweet revenge for Wilson, who still harbours bitter memories of Weiss’ days in Glasgow.
Speaking on the Open Goal podcast, Wilson didn’t mince his words when asked about the former Rangers winger. “He was a p***k, Weiss.
He was,” Wilson fumed. “Remember it was that period where El Hadji Diouf and all that was there, and they had a squad with some individuals that were just…”
Wilson then recounted a painful moment in Celtic history when Weiss played a key role in securing a Rangers league title.
“Remember Sammy [Georgios Samaras] missed the penalty at Ibrox, Rangers won the league, and then in the celebrations, I’m sure he set up the penalty, into McGregor, and he played it out, and they all started celebrating. He was a f*** d*rk, so he was,” Wilson continued.
“I was buzzing. I couldn’t believe he was captain of them last night! But I was buzzing.”
On the pitch, Celtic showed no mercy, with Liam Scales opening the scoring by heading in from an Arne Engels corner.
While the home side had to wait until the second half to extend their lead, they did so quickly, with Kyogo Furuhashi finding the back of the net after some impressive wing play by Nicolas Kuhn.
Engels, who had already made a name for himself with a penalty goal in his debut against Hearts, added a second from the spot, demonstrating his cool under pressure.
Bratislava briefly hit back through a wonder strike by defender Kevin Wimmer, but it wasn’t enough to stop Celtic’s momentum. Daizen Maeda and Adam Idah sealed the rout with further goals, ensuring a memorable night for the home support.
After the game, Arne Engels, Celtic’s record signing, expressed his delight at the result and the atmosphere.
“With the crowd at the beginning, it was exceptional – a sound like I’d never heard before. It’s indescribable actually, so I really enjoyed it, and to get a victory like this is more than deserved,” he said.
Reflecting on his performance, Engels added: “Of course, it was nice to get a goal, but the most important thing was that we grabbed a win, and we did that exceptionally well. But we still need to keep on working, and I still need to keep on working to improve.”
Engels, clearly humbled by the occasion, also highlighted the camaraderie within the squad.
“I’m really pleased with the guys. They’re helping me all the time before and after the game, telling me some details, so it will only get better.”
As Celtic march forward in their European campaign, the night was a stark reminder of the contrasting fortunes of their former rivals and a personal triumph for Wilson, who saw his past grievances laid to rest with the dominant victory.
