Ally McCoist had an amusing off-camera exchange with Peter Schmeichel during Celtic’s commanding 5-1 Champions League victory over Slovan Bratislava, commentator Darren Fletcher revealed.
The moment came as Celtic cruised to their biggest-ever win in the competition, with goals from Liam Scales, Kyogo, Arne Engels, Daizen Maeda, and Adam Idah.
Kevin Wimmer’s long-range strike provided scant consolation for the Slovak side, already trailing 3-0 when he netted.
The opening goal came from Scales in the 17th minute, and though the goals poured in during the second half, that first-half strike was the only one before the break.
This allowed TNT’s coverage team to dissect the action during the interval, and Fletcher shared a humorous anecdote involving McCoist and Schmeichel.
Peter Schmeichel, at Parkhead to watch his son Kasper in action for Celtic, had evidently been revelling in Celtic’s lead. But McCoist, the Rangers legend, couldn’t resist a little wind-up.
Fletcher recounted the scene as the cameras panned to the pair at half-time:
“What you have missed is a wonderful conversation between Ally and Peter Schmeichel. Obviously Kasper’s playing for Celtic, they lead 1-0, and Peter was quite happy to tell Ally about the score. Your response was?”
McCoist, ever the joker, responded with faux innocence: “I was genuinely pleased for the Glasgow team…” before Fletcher interjected with the punchline: “You said it looked offside from here…”
McCoist, chuckling, then confessed: “It looked offside, definitely!”
The light-hearted banter between McCoist and Schmeichel added an extra touch of fun to what was already a memorable night for Celtic, as they celebrated a resounding win on the European stage.
