Brendan Rodgers shared his thoughts after Celtic’s 5-2 victory over Falkirk at Celtic Park, praising the Championship side for their impressive performance.
Despite the gulf in financial resources between the two clubs, Falkirk gave Celtic a real challenge, particularly in the first half.
Finn Yeats, Alfredo Agyeman, and Ross MacIver stood out for the visitors, creating problems for the Hoops and pressing them hard.
Falkirk’s approach was refreshing, and Rodgers acknowledged their efforts after the game, giving credit to manager John McGlynn’s tactics.
Rodgers said to Premier Sports, “Got to give immense credit to Falkirk. I’ve really enjoyed watching and analysing them because in terms of a football idea, the game, what John’s doing… they’re probably the best team that we’ve played this season in terms of how they want to work the game, how they want to work the ball. So they can be really proud of how they done.
“They pressed it really well, they were aggressive. They came with the 4-3-3 to try and disrupt and in the end they got a very good first goal.”
When asked by Michael Stewart if it was refreshing to see Falkirk attacking more than some Premiership sides, Rodgers added,
“Absolutely, it’s great. If it happens more when I have my starters playing that would be fantastic. I think their attitude to the game is very, very good. John has brought that to Raith and Falkirk and will get his rewards for that. But it’s never easy.
“They had nice mobility, good technicians in the team, good pace in good areas and maybe not every team has that. They play a different style.”
Rodgers was right. Falkirk’s bold approach, pressing high and attacking Celtic, was a departure from the defensive tactics many teams employ against the Glasgow giants.
For 70 minutes, the Bairns kept Celtic under pressure with quick transitions and relentless intensity, forcing the Hoops to make changes to wrestle back control of the match.
Falkirk currently sit second in the Scottish Championship, level on points with Ayr United and with two games in hand.
John McGlynn’s tactical acumen and the energy he’s brought to the side suggest that Falkirk could be serious contenders for back-to-back promotions. Their display against Celtic will only boost the belief that they belong back in the Premiership.
