West Ham fans’ expectations have noticeably risen in recent years, possibly due to the club’s untapped potential and the promises made when moving to the London Stadium.
What once might have been seen as success – simply being secure in the Premier League – no longer seems enough for the Hammers faithful.
With West Ham already knocked out of the Carabao Cup and just four points from their opening five Premier League matches, pressure is mounting on manager Julen Lopetegui.
Some reports suggest the Spaniard has just two or three games to save his job, though other sources, including journalist Fabrizio Romano, offer a more measured view.
Romano commented on the speculation surrounding Lopetegui’s future: “Although some reports say Julen Lopetegui has three games to save his job, I’ve no confirmation on that. For sure the West Ham hierarchy wants to see a change in RESULTS as soon as possible. Lopetegui knows that.”
He also acknowledged the slow start to the campaign but pointed to the considerable changes at the club over the summer as a mitigating factor:
“It’s been a poor start to the season but the club understands they changed many players, new staff… so it can take time. But now RESULTS are needed.”
Despite the underwhelming start, West Ham showed promise in their recent performance against Liverpool at Anfield. For the first 60-70 minutes, they gave Jurgen Klopp’s side a real challenge, but lapses in defence ultimately cost them.
If they can work on tightening up defensively and taking their chances in front of goal, there’s no reason why Lopetegui’s men can’t turn things around and have a successful season.
The next few games will undoubtedly be crucial, as West Ham look to steady the ship and meet the heightened expectations of their fanbase.
