Michael Ball has expressed concern that Everton fans may struggle to forgive Jesper Lindstrom if he continues to display the kind of frustration witnessed during their 2-1 win over Crystal Palace on 28 September.
The Danish winger, a summer signing, endured a difficult afternoon at Goodison Park, often looking isolated and out of sync with his teammates.
His visible frustration with the situation didn’t go unnoticed, as he struggled to make an impact on the game.
Speaking to the Liverpool Echo on 30 September, Ball commented on Lindstrom’s performance and his reaction to the lack of support on the pitch:
“It feels like we’re not all singing from the same hymn sheet. We saw the disappointment from Jesper Lindstrom not having the best of games but while I get that and it happens, he needs help.
“He was getting frustrated because he was isolated. When he received the ball, he had no midfielder asking for it, no striker round the corner to pass to while Ashley Young was 20-30 yards too deep to support.
“Yes, he reacted when he lost the ball, waving his arms up, but that’s a message to his team-mates to go and help him. It’s a learning curve for him though that the Everton fans won’t forgive you if you act like that.
“We can all have poor games when things don’t go for you, but show a reaction. Wave your hands, scream and shout, after you’ve won the ball back.”
Lindstrom’s frustration during the match was evident, but it’s also understandable given that he is still in the process of adapting to a new team, league, and style of play.
As a player who joined Everton in the summer, the 24-year-old is keen to prove himself in the Premier League.
However, his isolation on the pitch points to wider issues, potentially related to tactics or a lack of cohesion within the team, rather than simply his individual form.
While Lindstrom’s competitive edge and desire to succeed are commendable, Everton fans are known for their no-nonsense approach when it comes to player commitment.
