Rangers legend Ally McCoist offered a playful response when asked whether he’d like to see rivals Celtic relegated.
McCoist, who famously managed Rangers during their fall into the old Scottish Third Division following liquidation in 2012, was quick to share his thoughts, but with a typical touch of humour.
McCoist played a crucial role in guiding the club back up the leagues, leading them to back-to-back promotions and into the Championship before stepping down in 2014.
Since then, Rangers have experienced a resurgence, winning the Scottish Premiership in 2021 under Steven Gerrard and coming agonisingly close to European glory, losing the Europa League final on penalties to Eintracht Frankfurt the following year.
Now in the thick of another title race, with Celtic just three points ahead, McCoist was asked if he’d like to see their rivals experience the same fate Rangers did over a decade ago. His response, delivered on talkSPORT, was as candid as ever:
“No! Bottom three would suit me fine!” McCoist quipped to co-host Jeff Stelling.
He went on to explain the unique importance of the Old Firm rivalry. “The games against each other are what we all generally live for.
“I was at the 3-3 game [at Ibrox], tremendous. When Rangers went down to the third division, I don’t care what anybody says, you missed us. You missed the Old Firm games, because there’s something special about them.
“I don’t think Liverpool fans would want Everton to be successful, but they love the games against them, and they would miss the games against them.”
