Thierry Henry believes Arsenal should have granted Unai Emery more time as manager, particularly given the Spaniard’s continued success at Aston Villa.
Emery, who took over from Arsène Wenger at the Emirates, led Arsenal to the Europa League final in 2019 during his first season in charge, a commendable achievement. Although the Gunners fell short in the final, many viewed it as a promising start to Emery’s tenure.
However, Emery struggled to maintain consistency, and his inability to firmly establish control over the squad led to his dismissal midway through the 2019/2020 season.
Mikel Arteta was appointed as his successor, and since then, Arsenal have undergone a significant transformation.
Arteta has reshaped the culture of the club, made decisive calls on key players, and turned Arsenal into serious contenders for major honours. The squad Arteta commands today is far stronger than the one he inherited.
Yet Henry feels that Emery’s potential at Arsenal wasn’t fully realised. The former striker argues that with more time, the Spanish coach might have found success in north London.
Emery’s impressive work at Aston Villa, where he has crafted a dynamic and competitive side, serves as evidence of his managerial prowess.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Henry said:
“He’s a tactical genius. He always goes out there and makes sure that his team has an advantage tactically because that’s how he operates.”
Henry added: “It’s no disrespect to what Mikel Arteta is doing – and he’s doing extremely well for Arsenal – but I just thought that if we kept [Emery] a bit longer he would have been a success at Arsenal.”
He continued, “He did show it straight after when he left the club. I have massive respect for him.”
While Emery’s managerial abilities are clear, losing control of the dressing room at the Emirates ultimately sealed his fate.
