The Argentine international midfielder is nearing 100 appearances with us since joining from Real Betis in 2019 on loan. Despite starting only four of his 10 appearances this term, he could see increased playing time due to our current struggles with injuries, suspensions, and players leaving for international tournaments.
Gio operates in Ange Postecoglou’s possession-based system, which complements his style. In the left-eight role within our current 4-3-3 formation, he has demonstrated his ability, notably in recent matches against Aston Villa and Manchester City, showcasing his dominance against top teams in the midfield.
Gio’s availability and form will be pivotal in 2024, starting with the New Year’s Day clash against a Bournemouth team in good form as we aim to conclude the calendar year on a positive note.
In the match program for Sunday’s game against Cherries, Gio explained, “This is where I’m playing now, I like it as an eight. I see a lot of the ball with this coach – I feel more relaxed, and I really enjoy watching the action because every player knows what he has to do.”
