West Ham United have taken Ghanaian defender Abdul Rashid Adam on trial for the next few weeks, as reported by insider ExWHUEmployee through The West Ham Way’s Patreon (Thursday, 24 October).
The 18-year-old, who currently plays for Benab FC in Ghana’s second division, was brought to East London by West Ham’s technical director Tim Steidten.
With the trial underway, the Hammers are evaluating whether Adam has the potential to earn a permanent move, particularly with several promising defenders already within their youth system.
Who is Abdul Rashid Adam?
Given Benab FC’s status in the second tier of Ghanaian football, information on Adam is limited. However, according to Owuraku Ampofo, a journalist for Ghanaian outlet 3Sports, the young defender is highly regarded in his homeland.
Ampofo took to X (formerly Twitter) to offer insight into Adam’s playing style, describing him as a versatile left-back who can also operate comfortably as a left-sided centre-back.
He praised the teenager’s passing ability and aggressive approach in duels, indicating that Adam could add a dynamic edge to West Ham’s defence if signed.
With other European clubs reportedly showing interest in Adam, this trial provides the Hammers with a unique opportunity to assess the player at close quarters. He will join West Ham’s Under-18s for now, giving the coaching staff a chance to gauge how well he adapts to the level of competition in England.
Strengthening the Academy
West Ham have been placing more emphasis on their academy development in recent times, reflected in the recent promotion of Kevin Keen from Under-18s Lead Coach to Lead Professional Development Phase Coach. Identifying and nurturing young talent remains a priority for the club, and bringing players like Adam into the fold is a part of that strategy.
Fans will be eager to see if Adam impresses during his trial and can join the ranks of promising youngsters looking to make the step up to the senior squad.
