Celtic are tipped to reach the Champions League knockout play-offs, according to Opta’s latest supercomputer predictions.
The Hoops have taken four points from their opening three group-phase matches, with performances ranging from emphatic to humbling.
Their European campaign kicked off in style with a 5-0 demolition of Slovan Bratislava under the floodlights at Celtic Park, sparking hopes of a deep run in the competition.
However, reality hit hard in Germany, where Borussia Dortmund ruthlessly dismantled Celtic with a 7-1 thrashing, bringing Brendan Rodgers’ side crashing back down to earth. It was a harsh reminder of the step up in quality required at this level.
Celtic’s response on Wednesday night was a marked improvement. A disciplined performance in a 0-0 draw away to Atalanta showcased Rodgers’ tactical flexibility and the team’s resilience. Earning a point in Bergamo has kept their hopes of progressing alive.
Currently sitting 20th in the league phase table, Celtic remain in contention to advance to the play-offs.
Opta’s projections suggest that the Glasgow club will accumulate 11 points by the time their league phase concludes in January against Aston Villa.
That haul should be enough to secure 22nd place, comfortably within the top 24 required to progress.
The top 24 teams in the league phase advance to the knockout play-offs, while the bottom 12 will exit European competition entirely.
What’s next for Celtic in the Champions League?
Celtic now face two crucial home matches at Parkhead, against RB Leipzig and Club Brugge, which could determine their fate. Taking at least three points from these fixtures would be seen as a positive outcome, though anything less would leave them with an uphill task.
RB Leipzig have struggled in Europe, losing all three of their group games so far. However, with the German side currently joint-top of the Bundesliga, Celtic cannot afford complacency ahead of their meeting on November 5.
Club Brugge, meanwhile, have earned three points from their three matches but gave a strong account of themselves despite a 3-1 loss to AC Milan in midweek. They will certainly not roll over for Celtic.
With both games to be played in Glasgow, Celtic must believe in their ability to take full advantage of home support. Winning these fixtures would put Rodgers’ side in prime position to secure their place in the knockout play-offs and keep their European adventure alive.
