Ipswich Town midfielder Conor Chaplin is still grappling with the controversial penalty decision that marred Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Leicester City.
The flashpoint came as Chaplin was bundled over in the Foxes’ penalty area by Abdul Fatawu, a moment that Ipswich felt deserved a spot-kick.
Moments later, Ipswich’s Kalvin Phillips was shown a second yellow card for a late tackle on Ricardo Pereira, reducing the Tractor Boys to ten men.
Leicester capitalised, snatching a 94th-minute equaliser through Jordan Ayew, leaving Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna furious over what he deemed “unacceptable” refereeing decisions.
Chaplin, too, appears far from reconciled with the referee’s call. On Sunday evening, he took to Instagram to express his frustration, sharing an image of the collision with Fatawu alongside a shrugging man emoji, hinting at his disbelief over the non-penalty decision.
In his post-match comments, McKenna didn’t mince his words, calling the incident a clear-cut penalty.
“Conor moves the ball onto his left foot, the winger comes steaming out to Conor and just steams into his stomach as he goes to take his shot. I don’t think it’s a debatable one,” he stated.
Leicester boss Steve Cooper, however, remained unfazed when asked about the incident.
“For us or them? I can’t remember. I didn’t see it, sorry. Oh, I do remember, it was from a set-piece, a free-kick, wasn’t it? Yeah. No, I didn’t see it. I remember the moment though,” he remarked, seemingly brushing aside the controversy.
Ipswich fans have been vocal in their discontent, feeling aggrieved by the decision.
Leicester supporters, meanwhile, were quick to remind them of a similar incident in last season’s clash, when Ipswich’s Cameron Burgess appeared to barge over Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in the box – yet no penalty was awarded then either.
