A major transfer twist has struck Celtic just an hour before their Champions League clash with RB Leipzig tonight, as Barcelona are reportedly preparing to recall Alex Valle from his season-long loan in January.
The Spanish outlet El Nacional.cat claims that Barcelona have decided to bring the 20-year-old left-back back to the Nou Camp in the upcoming transfer window.
Valle, who joined Celtic on a season-long loan in August, has impressed since his arrival in Glasgow, making eight appearances and adapting to life in green and white.
After a somewhat uncertain start, Valle has found his footing under Brendan Rodgers. The young defender has provided essential cover for Greg Taylor, stepping up with three assists during his time at Celtic.
His performances have not gone unnoticed back in Spain, with Barcelona reportedly monitoring his progress closely.
Barcelona’s reported interest in recalling Valle stems from an injury crisis on the left side of their defence.
With Alejandro Balde as their only recognised senior left-back and Gerard Martin relegated to reserve duties, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is thought to see Valle as a timely solution.
The prospect of a January reunion is therefore seen as an ideal way to ease the club’s concerns in that position.
Should Barcelona act on their recall plan, Celtic would be entitled to compensation, as the initial agreement was for Valle to remain in Glasgow until the season’s end.
Joan Laporta and Deco are said to be working on a deal that would see Valle return to the Nou Camp early, leaving Celtic with the task of replacing him in the new year.
The potential loss of Valle could present a notable setback for Celtic, just as the young Spaniard was finding his stride within Rodgers’ squad.
