Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s time as Everton’s first-choice striker could be running out, with Sean Dyche hinting at the return of Armando Broja during his latest press conference.
The 27-year-old striker has struggled for consistency this season. After scoring twice and providing an assist in the first four Premier League games, Calvert-Lewin has since gone goalless in the last seven fixtures.
Despite his struggles, Dyche has had little choice but to persist with him, given Beto’s underwhelming performances since his arrival at Goodison Park.
Calvert-Lewin has started all 11 league matches this season, but Dyche’s comments suggest that change may be on the horizon.
Speaking ahead of the weekend, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo [23 November], Dyche provided an update on Broja’s recovery, raising hopes for the Albanian striker’s imminent return.
“We are discussing the next steps now. He has had a really strong week and a really strong rehab, so hopefully that allows us to fast-track it a bit more than we normally would.
“He has had extra time with the sports science team and his stats are very strong.”
Broja’s return could provide Dyche with the alternative he desperately needs in attack. On loan from Chelsea, Broja has demonstrated his ability in flashes, earning 23 international caps for Albania.
If he can hit the ground running after injury, he could soon displace Calvert-Lewin, whose future at Everton remains uncertain.
With just 12 months left on his contract, Calvert-Lewin’s long-term role at Goodison Park is far from guaranteed.
Dyche must weigh whether it makes sense to continue relying on a player who might not be part of Everton’s plans beyond the 2024/25 season.
For now, much depends on Broja’s fitness and form upon his return. His success could spell the end of Calvert-Lewin’s reign as Everton’s leading striker.
