Bryan King has cast doubt on Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s long-term future at Everton, questioning whether the striker is the right fit for the club.
The former Goodison Park scout criticised the 27-year-old’s inconsistency amid ongoing negotiations over a new contract.
Calvert-Lewin’s current deal expires at the end of the season, and despite Everton’s confidence in securing an extension [via BBC Sport, 23 November], King remains unconvinced by the forward’s ability to deliver consistently.
Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, King said:
“What Everton should be doing is trying to encourage Calvert-Lewin to start scoring goals again.
“He is another Everton signing who has never quite lived up to the potential. There have been little periods where he’s looked the business. However, there have been much longer periods where he hasn’t looked good at all.
“The supporters at Everton are pretty good judges and I think they’ve been pretty tolerant with him. Therefore, he needs to sharpen up now and demonstrate to people that he can be a reliable striker.
“However, his inconsistency has caused doubt among supporters about him. Is he the right striker for Everton? Personally, as it looks at the moment, I don’t think so.”
Calvert-Lewin’s Future in Doubt
Calvert-Lewin has been linked with a move away from Everton, with clubs such as Roma previously reported to have shown interest [via ASRomaLive, 24 November].
However, his stock appears to have fallen, with potential suitors now reconsidering their plans [via TEAMtalk, 25 November].
This uncertainty could leave the striker inclined to remain at Goodison Park, provided Everton secure their Premier League status. Yet, the club must weigh up whether Calvert-Lewin’s recent form merits a new deal.
Without a goal in his last eight games, the former England international faces mounting pressure to improve and justify Everton’s continued faith in him. For now, both player and club appear at a crossroads.
