Leicester City’s search for a new manager is heating up following Steve Cooper’s sacking over the weekend.
With the Foxes’ clash against Brentford fast approaching, the club is reportedly prepared to pay the release clause for West Bromwich Albion boss Carlos Corberan, according to reports from Spain.
Cooper was dismissed after securing just two wins from 12 Premier League matches, despite Leicester sitting above the relegation zone.
While a permanent replacement has yet to be named, a shortlist including Ruud van Nistelrooy and Lee Carsley has been drawn up. However, Marca claims Leicester are now prioritising Corberan.
Leicester Ready to Activate Corberan’s Release Clause
The Marca report suggests that Leicester are rushing to finalise an appointment and are willing to pay the €2.5million (£2m) release clause in Corberan’s contract at West Brom.
The Spaniard was previously on Leicester’s radar over the summer when Enzo Maresca departed for Chelsea, but the Foxes ultimately opted for Cooper, whose stint at the King Power Stadium has been short-lived.
Corberan, described as an “elite” coach by the Spanish outlet, has been identified as a leading candidate alongside former Chelsea manager Graham Potter.
However, Corberan’s track record at Huddersfield Town and West Brom appears to have positioned him as Leicester’s preferred choice.
Corberan’s Credentials
Corberan has guided West Brom to seventh in the Championship this season, winning six of their 17 games while drawing nine. The Baggies have lost just twice, away to Sheffield Wednesday and at home to Middlesbrough, both within three days.
However, their form has been less convincing recently, with seven draws in their last eight games and only one win, a narrow victory over Hull City earlier this month.
Despite this, Corberan remains highly regarded at Leicester, who view his tactical acumen and Championship experience as assets for stabilising the club.
Whether he accepts the role and Leicester can negotiate his release in time for their next fixture remains to be seen.
