Kris Boyd has dismissed any chance of Rangers staging a title challenge this season, insisting his former side should instead focus on securing second place ahead of Aberdeen.
Rangers’ stuttering start has seen them collect just 23 points from their opening 12 games, leaving them 11 points adrift of Celtic and nine behind Jimmy Thelin’s Aberdeen.
The former Rangers striker and now outspoken pundit has been critical of Ibrox boss Philippe Clement and poured cold water on the notion of a revival in the league.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Boyd said:
“I think you can write off Rangers mounting a title challenge this season, it’s been really, really poor so far. For anybody still speaking about a title race in Scotland, there is absolutely no chance. Rangers have got a fight on their hands with Aberdeen to finish second.
“They (Rangers) need to worry about themselves. The performances need to get better and they need to start picking up points on a regular basis because it’s not good enough. Celtic are in a really good place and Aberdeen for me will fight it out with Rangers for second place.”
Europa League: A Silver Lining
While their domestic campaign has faltered, Clement has found some respite in Europe. Rangers have earned seven points from their first four Europa League games, putting them in contention for a spot in the knockout rounds.
Boyd believes the team’s European performances have been far superior and suggests they could produce a positive result in their next fixture against Nice.
He said:
“When you look at Rangers form in the league, it’s been really poor. But in Europe they’ve been very good. It wouldn’t surprise me if Rangers go to France tomorrow and get something.
“The game is played at a slower tempo, and they have got players that are very good on the ball and make things happen. But in Scotland, for whatever reason, it’s just not working. Europe is a bonus, and Rangers need to improve domestically.”
With Celtic pulling further ahead, Rangers face an uphill battle to salvage their season on the home front.
