Celtic are reportedly among a host of clubs tracking Motherwell prodigy Lennon Miller, whose impressive performances in the Scottish Premiership have turned heads.
However, former Celtic defender Mark Wilson has advised the 18-year-old to think carefully before swapping Fir Park for Celtic Park, suggesting a move south of the border might better serve his career.
Miller made history when he debuted just six days after turning 16, becoming Motherwell’s youngest-ever player in a major competition.
Since then, the midfielder has flourished, tallying 25 appearances last season and adding 11 more this campaign, including scoring his first Premiership goals.
His meteoric rise has made him a target for Celtic, but Wilson believes staying put or heading to England might be the wiser choice.
Speaking to Gambling.com, Wilson said:
“I’m not sure if it would be [a good move for Lennon Miller to go to Celtic]. Lennon Miller at this stage probably needs to play as many games as he possibly can. Would he break into that Celtic team at the minute? I’m not sure. I’m not saying he’s not got the talent to do it, he’s an incredibly talented boy.”
Wilson went on to stress the importance of regular game time for the young starlet.
“I would like to see him get another half-season playing for Motherwell. The world’s his oyster, he’s going to be an incredible footballer, he is a very good footballer, but maybe staying where he is might do him the world of good for now.”
The former Hoops player also highlighted the growing success of young Scots making their mark in England, suggesting Miller could follow in the footsteps of Liverpool’s Andy Robertson and Aston Villa’s John McGinn.
“I think he [Lennon Miller] will have major interest from clubs down south. Because you’ve seen the success of some of our young Scottish players that have moved down there, and maybe English clubs are rethinking their transfer policies and where they source their players, especially with Brexit,” Wilson added.
He concluded with praise for Miller’s potential and a nod to the role his family could play in shaping his future:
“Lennon Miller can be every bit as good as them, if he gets the right move and the right advice. His dad’s a very knowledgeable person in football and keeps a level head, so I’m sure he’ll advise him correctly. It’ll be interesting to see how brave Motherwell are in terms of what they demand for him, because he’s worth a lot of money.”
With Miller’s stock rising, his next move will undoubtedly be one to watch.
