Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that Celtic have the option to extend Kasper Schmeichel’s contract by another year, following his summer arrival on an initial one-year deal.

The Celtic manager was questioned about the goalkeeper’s contract after Schmeichel delivered a man-of-the-match performance in the 3-0 win over Hibernian. Rodgers praised the Danish international and clarified the club’s position regarding his future.

Speaking to the BBC, Rodgers said: “One, I could trigger it any time. Two, I wouldn’t tell you, I would tell him first. What we have is, we have a top keeper.”

Schmeichel played a pivotal role in the victory, making crucial saves to maintain a clean sheet. However, Rodgers admitted that his side’s pressing left much to be desired.

“The win was very good on the back of a midweek game at Aberdeen,” Rodgers said. “I think it was a fantastic win, some of our attacking play was excellent, we scored three goals.”

“Our downside for today was our pressing, our pressing was nowhere near what I would want it to be and expect it to be. Sometimes that can happen when you make the changes and have the midweek game.”

The Celtic boss added: “Thankfully, I have a top, top international goalkeeper who when we needed him made saves. We could have scored more goals also. But overall, the win was very, very good.”

Schmeichel’s form continues to underline his importance to Celtic’s domestic and European ambitions.
