Tottenham have agreed to sign Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig, who could become a permanent player at the end of the season.
The 27-year-old striker will fly to London for a medical and Spurs will cover his wages until the end of the season.
Werner has Premier League experience at Chelsea, having joined the Blues in 2020 after transferring from RB Leipzig for £45 million.
The German has scored 23 goals in 89 appearances for Chelsea and will return to Leipzig in 2022.
He has scored two goals in 14 appearances for the Bundesliga side this season, who revealed on Saturday that he did not take part in their friendly with St Gallen due to transfer talks.
Leipzig manager Marco Rose confirmed that the striker will move to north London soon.
“It is right that Timo wants to leave on loan. Timo would like to go to the European Championships,” Rose told German Sky.
“We wish him all the best and keep our fingers crossed for him.”
Werner has 57 German captaincy titles but last played for his country in March 2023 in a friendly defeat to Belgium.
He is expected to return to London, where he won the Champions League in two mixed years with the Blues.
Spurs are looking to strengthen their attacking options with Son Heung-min away with South Korea at the Asian Cup and James Maddison still out through injury.
Tottenham next play in the Premier League when they host Manchester United on Sunday 14 January.
Two years after leaving Chelsea, Werner will return to London in the white jersey of Spurs. The German striker will join Spurs on loan until the end of the season, having struggled for playing time at Leipzig this season.
Leipzig confirmed that Werner was absent for the friendly against St. Gallen of Switzerland due to his imminent transfer to London. On Twitter they wrote: “Timo Werner is not in the squad for today’s friendly as he is in negotiations with another club.”
Werner, who has been linked with a return to the Premier League for weeks, will join his former club’s rivals, Spurs. The German striker will offer new boss Ange Postecoglou another much-needed option up front as captain Son Heung-min will miss several weeks due to international commitments at the 2023 Asian Cup. Werner will be hoping to produce better results in north London than he did in his two years in the west of the capital, scoring just 23 goals in 89 appearances for the Blues.
The loan deal is not yet finalised, but Werner hopes to return to the Premier League next weekend against Manchester United, with whom he has been linked in recent weeks.
