Former Celtic winger Jota appears set for another move following a disappointing stint with Rennes.
The 25-year-old joined the Ligue 1 side in the summer after an unhappy spell in Saudi Arabia, but his fortunes have yet to improve.
According to L’Équipe, Rennes are considering a squad overhaul, and Jota could be among those to depart.
Celtic sold Jota to Al-Ittihad in the summer of 2023 for a fee exceeding £25 million. However, the Portuguese star struggled to find his footing in Saudi Arabia, enduring a lack of support from both the club and its fans—a stark contrast to his celebrated time at Celtic Park.
Frozen out of the Al-Ittihad squad on multiple occasions, Jota made a cut-price move to Rennes in search of a fresh start.
Since leaving Celtic, Jota has made just 34 appearances over 18 months. His time in Glasgow, however, remains the pinnacle of his career.
In two seasons, he played 83 matches, scored 28 goals, and provided 26 assists. Under Ange Postecoglou, Jota was instrumental in winning five trophies and was poised for further growth under Brendan Rodgers.
Celtic, meanwhile, are in urgent need of reinforcements on the wing, with James Forrest sidelined for six weeks.
Jota’s return could provide a high-quality solution for Brendan Rodgers as he looks to strengthen his squad. Additionally, rumours suggest Luis Palma may leave for the MLS in January, further increasing the need for wide options.
