Harry Maguire enjoyed a two-year stint at Leicester City before making a high-profile move to Manchester United.
Leicester signed the defender from Hull City in July 2017 for a fee of around £11 million. During his time with the Tigers, Maguire was part of a solid defensive unit that also featured Liverpool star Andy Robertson.
At the King Power Stadium, Maguire made 76 appearances across all competitions, contributing five goals and three assists.
His performances earned him an £80 million transfer to Manchester United in 2019, setting a world record for a defender. However, his time at Old Trafford has been tumultuous.
United have struggled for consistency over the years, and Maguire has often been a target for criticism from fans. His form has fluctuated, and he has frequently been blamed for the team’s broader issues.
With Maguire’s contract at United set to expire in 2025, rumors have surfaced that Leicester City might look to bring their former player back.

In the 2024/25 season, Maguire has had a mixed role at Manchester United, moving in and out of the starting XI. Injuries sidelined him during a period when Ruud van Nistelrooy took over as interim manager following Erik ten Hag’s dismissal.
Despite this, Maguire spent considerable time working with Van Nistelrooy during his stint as Ten Hag’s assistant. Earlier this year, the defender expressed admiration for the Dutchman, as noted by FourFourTwo:
“For the team, last season was a real disappointment, but we finished on a high. There has been a lot of positive energy after that. There has been a lot of changes within the club with the hierarchy and the staff around the manager.
“I think that will help us. Ruud is an excellent coach – you can tell that he’s addicted to football. He loves analysing the game. I’ve been really impressed by his ideas.”
Leicester City’s other centre-back targets
While the idea of Maguire’s return might appeal to fans, Leicester are also reportedly exploring alternative options ahead of the January transfer window.
Valentin Gomez has been linked with the Foxes. Like Maguire, Gomez is left-footed, a quality Leicester currently lack in their defensive lineup.
Another name on their radar is Atalanta BC’s Ben Godfrey, who comes with Premier League experience. However, interest from Italian clubs could complicate any potential deal.
Additionally, Leicester are said to be competing with Manchester City for Caleb Okoli, a defender likened to one of their current standout players. The Foxes are keeping their options open as they look to bolster their backline.
