Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Arsenal are open to making moves in the January transfer window if an extraordinary opportunity arises.
The Gunners face a challenging period without star winger Bukayo Saka, who is set to miss over two months after undergoing surgery for a torn hamstring.
In light of this setback, Wolves forward Matheus Cunha has reportedly emerged as a potential target for Arsenal.
Cunha has been in scintillating form this season, netting 10 goals in 19 Premier League appearances while showcasing his versatility by excelling both on the wing and as a central striker.
When questioned about the possibility of strengthening the squad in response to Saka’s absence, Arteta expressed Arsenal’s readiness to act.
“Well, my focus honestly now is just about within the squad the resources we have to be as competitive as we possibly can,” he said.
“We have many, many options to do that. And if something unbelievable [becomes] available and if the club is willing to do it, we’ll have to consider it.”
Cunha’s Influence and Wolves’ Standpoint:
Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui has praised Cunha’s contributions this season, underlining his importance to the team.
Speaking to Amazon Prime following Wolves’ Boxing Day victory over Manchester United, Lopetegui emphasized Cunha’s potential and impact.
“He is a special player,” Lopetegui said.
“He can do things that can make the difference in small details. Matheus Cunha is a player, in my opinion, who can reach high standards in this league.”
When asked about the possibility of Cunha leaving Wolves, Lopetegui was hopeful the forward would remain.
“I hope not, I hope not because we need him. He’s come here with a lot of energy. He said to us it’s been his dream for 18 years to come here and manage a team in the Premier League.
“You can see the impact, you can see the energy, how he can teach us things on the pitch. I think he can help everyone show what we can do.”
While Arsenal’s interest in Cunha highlights their intent to reinforce their squad in January, the player’s importance to Wolves could complicate any potential transfer.
As the window approaches, all eyes will be on whether Arteta can secure an “unbelievable” addition to bolster the Gunners’ title challenge.
