West Ham are really interested in Ajax captain Steven Bergwijn this month, sources have told Football Insider.
The 26-year-old former Tottenham star is a target for the Ironmen, who are looking to improve their attacking options in the winter window.
Ajax are said to have priced Bergwijn’s head at a premium to ward off interest from West Ham, meaning David Moyes will have to pay more than £15m for the Netherlands international.
A well-informed source told Football Insider that a potential deal between West Ham, Ajax and the player has not yet progressed.
It is believed that the deal could depend on the possible departure of Irons striker Said Benrahma, as his fans are not ready to approve a permanent contract for the Algerian international.
Football Insider revealed on Saturday (6 January) that Moyes’ side have put off Lyon, Wolves and Fulham by putting a £20m price tag on striker Benrahma.
Sources say all three sides prefer to go on loan with an option to buy the 28-year-old.
Bergwijn has Premier League experience, having spent two-and-a-half years at Tottenham, where he scored eight goals and ten assists in 83 appearances in all competitions.
For struggling Ajax, he scored eight goals and three assists in 20 games.
The left winger, who can also play as a central striker, is under contract in Amsterdam until June 2027.
West Ham signed two Ajax stars in the last summer window, bringing Edson Alvarez and Mohamed Kudus to London for large sums.
The Hammers are sixth in the Premier League standings ahead of their next Premier League match against Sheffield United on 21 January.
Moyes’ team will play in the Europa League knockout stages from March.
