Wolverhampton Wanderers have wasted no time addressing their defensive needs in the January transfer window, moving swiftly to strengthen their backline.
According to TBR Football, Wolves are on the verge of securing the signing of Ivory Coast international Emmanuel Agbadou from Stade de Reims.
However, the club’s recruitment drive in defence may not stop there, with David Ornstein reporting that Wolves are eyeing additional reinforcements.
One of the players under consideration has been described as “one of the best central defenders in Ligue 1, but also in Europe.”
Wolves Eyeing Kevin Danso After Agbadou
The player in question is Kevin Danso, the Austrian international currently playing for Lens.
Wolves have been linked with Danso for several weeks, with reports in December suggesting he is on their wishlist as they seek to further bolster their defensive options.
Although Wolves appear close to completing the signing of Agbadou, Ornstein has stated that the club remains interested in adding Danso to their ranks.
“That isn’t the end of Wolves’ business,” he said on NBC Sports.
“They’re looking to bring in another central defender as well, if they can. Kevin Danso, formerly of Southampton, now at Lens, also in France, (is) among the options that they admire.”
What Kevin Danso Could Bring to Wolves
Danso, a 26-year-old central defender, is a key figure at Lens and a regular for the Austrian national team.
His journey has seen him develop through the youth systems of Reading and MK Dons before breaking into senior football at Augsburg in Germany.
In 2019-20, Danso joined Southampton on loan but struggled to make an impact, appearing only six times while being deployed out of position at full-back.
A loan move to Fortuna Düsseldorf the following season revitalized his career, eventually leading to his transfer to Lens. Danso’s performances in France have drawn widespread praise.
His former manager at Lens, Franck Haise, highlighted his development in an interview with Austrian outlet Laola1, via talkSPORT, saying:
“Kevin is now one of the best central defenders in Ligue 1, but also in Europe. He has developed into a complete defender who is not only strong in the air but also has good technique with few mistakes in his build-up play and very clean passing.”
Rio Ferdinand also praised Danso’s quality, previously suggesting he would be a strong fit for Manchester United.
Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, he said: “The boy at Lens, there’s one there, he’s good.”
