The official MLS website caused widespread confusion on Wednesday night when it unexpectedly published an announcement claiming Celtic striker Kyogo had officially signed for Ronny Deila’s Atlanta United.
Following the incident, the MLS issued an apology, admitting the post was mistakenly published and clarifying that the Japanese striker had not made the move to America.
Ahead of Celtic’s lunchtime kick-off against Ross County in Dingwall, Brendan Rodgers addressed the ongoing transfer rumors surrounding the 29-year-old forward.
The Celtic manager confirmed that Kyogo would be part of the squad traveling for the match.
When asked about the confusion earlier in the week, Rodgers stated:
“I can guarantee you that he’ll be on the coach and travelling to Ross County, he’s certainly not in the MLS.”
He added:
“In this period of time, there’s always speculation around players, especially talented players, so I’m sure that will continue to be the case over the coming weeks.”
Reports have suggested that Atlanta United has a strong interest in Kyogo, and with the MLS transfer window open until 23 April, there remains ample time for an official bid to materialize.
In terms of what this might mean for Celtic, an MLS exit could align with both the club’s and Kyogo’s interests.
As noted in an opinion piece on The Celtic Star website, Celtic may consider their options regarding the striker once the Champions League group phase concludes later this month.
It’s important to note that any player signed in January would be ineligible for Celtic’s final two group-stage matches in the Champions League—against Young Boys at Celtic Park and Aston Villa at Villa Park.
However, such signings would be available for the play-off rounds, provided Celtic progresses beyond the group stage.
