Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly aiming to bolster their defensive options once again this transfer window, with RC Lens star Kevin Danso emerging as a key target for the struggling Premier League side.
Wolves experienced a brief resurgence under Vitor Pereira after he replaced Gary O’Neil as manager, securing victories against Leicester City and Manchester United, followed by a draw at Tottenham Hotspur. These results provided crucial points in their fight to avoid relegation.
However, a challenging run of fixtures has seen them slide back into the relegation zone, and without strengthening their defense, the club risks an unexpected drop to the Championship.
This has reportedly prompted Wolves to pursue Danso, with the club said to be “confident” of securing his signature in the coming days.
According to John Percy of The Telegraph, Wolves have submitted a £16 million bid for Danso and are optimistic about finalizing a deal for the Austrian international before the transfer window closes.
Danso has been a long-standing target for Wolves, and ongoing negotiations could see him become the second defensive signing of the January window for Pereira’s side.
The club has already secured Emmanuel Agbadou from Reims for £16.6 million as the Portuguese manager seeks to reinforce his backline and ensure Premier League survival.
Described as “rapid” by football analyst Ben Mattinson, Danso previously spent time on loan at Southampton. Now, he aims to establish a permanent career in the Premier League if he completes a move to the West Midlands in the near future.
Statistically, Wolves have the second-worst defensive record in the league, with only bottom-placed Southampton conceding more goals this season.
Danso’s arrival would be a significant boost for Wolves’ leaky defense, as concerns grow over their seven-year stay in the top flight potentially coming to an end due to a lack of recruitment in recent years.
With over 100 appearances in Ligue 1, 41 in the Bundesliga, and six in the Premier League, Danso brings a wealth of experience and could play a pivotal role in Pereira’s plans to secure survival.
