The former midfielder has witnessed Celtic’s dominance as a pundit over the years, but now, he’ll have to endure it firsthand from the dugout.

However, one of his former teammates, Ally McCoist, seems to have entered a world of delusion following Philippe Clement’s sacking.

Celtic told Rangers would have won the Premiership title if they signed Lawrence Shankland

Last season, Lawrence Shankland was in sensational form at Hearts, attracting interest not just from Rangers but also from Celtic.

The 29-year-old, whose contract at Hearts expires this summer, has struggled this season, netting only four league goals after scoring 21 in 32 games last term.

Yet, a deluded McCoist was ‘genuinely’ convinced that if Clement had signed Shankland last January, the title would have ended up at Ibrox, as he told talkSPORT.

“I actually think, last year, if they had gone and got Lawrence Shankland,” said McCoist. “I think they might have won the league. I genuinely do.

“In the window of last January, I think if they had gone and given Hearts whatever they wanted, then I think Shankland might have scored the goals that won Rangers the league.

“It wasn’t to be. Celtic are back and deservedly won the league and that was that.

“But the decline in the club, on and off the pitch, since they won the league, and were beaten on penalties in a Europa League final, after beating Leipzig, Dortmund, you name it, the decline hurts more than anything. It hurts to see.”
