Kevin Thelwell is expected to depart from his role as Everton’s director of football when his contract expires at the end of the season, as part of a broader restructuring led by the club’s new owners, The Friedkin Group (TFG), according to a report.
An article in The Times reveals that it remains uncertain whether Everton will appoint a direct replacement for Thelwell or shift to a different operational model.
While the decision is described as amicable, the move signals the formation of a new hierarchy as TFG seeks to imprint its vision on the club following its acquisition from former owner Farhad Moshiri in December.
Thelwell, who has held the position since February 25, 2022, spearheaded a comprehensive 120-point plan aimed at overhauling the football operations at Everton during his tenure.
The 51-year-old is the third individual to serve as director of football at Everton, following Steve Walsh and Marcel Brands. The role was established by Moshiri after he took over the club in 2016.
The return of David Moyes to Everton has significantly altered the dynamics at the club. Moyes, who previously guided the Blues to nine top-eight finishes during his first spell in charge—including a record-high fourth-place finish in the 2004/05 Premier League season—has always preferred a hands-on approach to player recruitment.
When questioned by the ECHO, a senior Everton insider declined to provide an update on Thelwell’s future but confirmed that he continues to operate in his current role without any immediate changes.
