Giovani Lo Celso is a funny case at Tottenham.
The Argentine is now actually one of Spurs’ longest-serving players, but he’s been on the fringes at Tottenham for so long that it’s easy to forget that he even plays for the north London club sometimes.
He’s barely gotten a game so far this season, and as you can imagine, there’s been plenty of chat about a potential January move for the midfielder.
However, speaking on The Tottenham Way Podcast, Tom Barclay has been speaking about Lo Celso’s future, and he’s led to believe that Tottenham don’t have any intention of selling the £45m man this winter as they prepare to lose key players to the African Cup of Nations.
Tottenham don’t want to sell Lo Celso:
Barclay shared what he knows about the midfielder.
“Regarding transfers and him, my understanding is that Spurs aren’t looking to let him go. Obviously Barcelona have a long-standing interest and have a problem now with Gavi’s injury, but I don’t think Spurs are doing anyone any favours with a loan deal. It could be different if there was a loan with obligation at some point, but my understanding is that with the African Cup of Nations coming up, that the likes of Hojbjerg and Lo Celso they are looking to keep hold of,” Barclay said.
Makes sense:
Let’s face it, Lo Celso probably won’t be a key player for Spurs anytime soon, but keeping him around for the next few months does make sense.
As Barclay says, Spurs will be losing two key midfielders to the African Cup of Nations in January, and Lo Celso will be needed as a depth option.
A season can swing on just a few bad performances, and if Spurs do leave themselves short in the winter, they could be in trouble.
Lo Celso probably doesn’t have a long-term future at Tottenham, but he won’t be leaving in the January window by the looks of things.
